In detail
The "Khelo India Centres and Sports Academies" is a component of the "Khelo India Scheme" implemented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, aimed at strengthening the sports ecosystem through support for sports centres, centres of excellence, and sports academies. The component seeks to improve utilization of existing sports infrastructure, provide coaching and sports science support, and promote grassroots as well as elite sports development. It includes Khelo India State Centres of Excellence, Khelo India Centres, and support to eligible residential sports centres. The scheme also supports talent identification, athlete development, sports academies, and online sports coaching through e-Khel Pathshala. Need-based financial assistance is provided for infrastructure, equipment, coaches, support staff, sports science services, and athlete development activities.
Who qualifies
> For Khelo India State Centres of Excellence:
The organisation must be an existing sports training facility of a State Government or Union Territory Government.
The organisation must possess sports infrastructure and training facilities.
The organisation must have coaching and support staff.
The organisation must demonstrate past performance of athletes at national or international levels.
The organisation must be selected through the prescribed appraisal and approval process.
> For Khelo India Centres:
The organisation must be a sports training facility located within a State or Union Territory.
The organisation may belong to a State Government.
The organisation may belong to a Public Sector Undertaking.
The organisation may belong to an autonomous body.
The organisation may be a school.
The organisation may be a university, including a private university.
The organisation may be another eligible organisation approved by the State or Union Territory Government.
The organisation must be shortlisted and recommended by the State or Union Territory Government.
> For Other Residential Centres:
The organisation must be an existing residential sports centre.
The organisation must have a good track record in academics and sports.
The organisation must have adequate boarding and lodging facilities.
The organisation must have sufficient space for sports development.
The organisation must have the capacity and willingness to develop sports, especially Olympic disciplines.
> For Sports Academies:
The organisation may be the Sports Authority of India.
The organisation may be a State Government entity.
The organisation may be a Union Territory Government entity.
The organisation may be a National Sports Federation or other eligible sports organisation.
The organisation may be a public entity.
The organisation may be a private entity.
The organisation may be established by an eminent sportsperson.
The organisation must satisfy the evaluation criteria approved by the Departmental Project Approval Committee.
What you get
> Khelo India State/UT Centre of Excellence:
- Need-based financial support for recurring and non-recurring expenditure.
- Support available for up to 3 "One State One Game" disciplines and sports science facilities.
- Funding amount determined through viability gap assessment.
- Support for coaches, support staff, sports science services, and sports equipment.
> Khelo India Centres:
- Annual recurring grant of up to ₹5,00,000/- per discipline.
- ₹3,00,000/- per year earmarked for remuneration of Past Champion Athletes at ₹25,000/- per month.
- Support for sports equipment, sports kits, competition exposure, physiotherapists, and recurring expenditure.
- Support for repair and maintenance and beneficiary-related expenses.
> One-Time Assistance for New Centres/Disciplines
One-time grant of up to ₹5,00,000/- per discipline.
Assistance for preparation or upgradation of sports fields.
Assistance for purchase of sports equipment and sports kits.
> Other Residential Centres:
- Grants-in-aid for boarding expenses.
- Support for education expenses.
- Support for competition exposure.
- Support for consumable sports equipment.
- Funding capped at ₹1,50,000/- per trainee per year, subject to revision by the Departmental Project Approval Committee (DPAC).
> Sports Academies:
- Need-based support for establishment, operation, and maintenance.
- Support for recurring and non-recurring expenditure.
- Support for engagement of High-Performance Directors, coaches, foreign coaches, sports scientists, and support staff.
- Support for monitoring and performance measurement systems.
- Support for sports science and sports medicine facilities.
- Support for equipment and critical infrastructure requirements.
> Online Sports Coaching
- Sports coaching and education through e-Khel Pathshala.
