What this is

The scheme aims to attract talented students towards higher education and promote academic excellence at the postgraduate level. The scholarship is tenable for the full duration of the postgraduate course, subject to a maximum period of two years.

In detail

The University Grants Commission (UGC), Department of Higher Education, has introduced the "Post Graduate Scholarship for University Rank Holders" scheme for University Rank Holders at the Undergraduate Level to encourage meritorious students to pursue postgraduate studies. The scheme aims to attract talented students towards higher education and promote academic excellence at the postgraduate level. The scholarship is awarded to first and second rank holders at the undergraduate level who secure admission to a regular full-time postgraduate degree programme in a recognized institution in India.

> Objectives:

a) To promote and nurture talent.

b) To reward meritorious students with outstanding performance at the Undergraduate level for pursuing postgraduate studies.

c) To Promote study in basic subjects both General as well as Honours at the undergraduate level. Professional courses are not covered under the scheme.

d) To build up academic excellence at the postgraduate level across the colleges and universities in the country.

Who qualifies

  • The applicant must have secured First Rank or Second Rank at the undergraduate level.
  • The applicant must have obtained a minimum of 60% marks in the undergraduate examination.
  • The applicant must have secured admission to a regular, full-time Master's Degree programme.
  • The applicant must be pursuing his/her first postgraduate degree.
  • The applicant must not be more than 30 years of age at the time of admission to the postgraduate course.
  • The applicant must study in a recognized University, Deemed University, Private University, Autonomous College, or Postgraduate College.
  • The undergraduate degree must belong to any of the following streams:
  • Life Sciences
  • Physical Sciences
  • Chemical Sciences
  • Earth Sciences
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Social Sciences
  • Commerce
  • Languages

What you get

Financial Assistance

  • Scholarship of ₹3,100 per month.
  • Scholarship is provided for a maximum period of two years (full duration of the postgraduate course).
  • Scholarship is disbursed through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode.
  • No additional assistance is provided towards hostel fees, medical expenses, or other incidental charges.
  • Students receiving this scholarship are not debarred from accepting other scholarships.

Number of Scholarships and Tenure

  • Total Scholarships Available: 3,000
  • Duration of Scholarship: Two years
  • The scholarship is not extendable beyond the approved tenure.

Who is excluded

  • Student pursuing distance education programmes.
  • Student enrolled in professional courses.
  • Student pursuing a second postgraduate degree.
  • Student who fail to satisfy the rank and minimum marks criteria.
